Case Studies
Aberdeen Western Peripheral
The Aberdeen Western Peripheral Route/Balmedie to Tipperty (AWPR/B-T) project is a major transport infrastructure project at the heart of the Scottish Government’s commitment to improve transport in Aberdeen and across the North East of Scotland. It involves the construction of a new 58km road which is expected to open later this year.
The new route consists of four sections - Balmedie to Tipperty (12km from Blackdog to Tipperty), the Northern Leg (16.1km from North Kingswells to Blackdog), the Southern Leg (18.7km from Charleston to North Kingswells) and the Fastlink (11.5km from Stonehaven to Cleanhill). Once open, the new road is expected to carry more than 43,000 vehicles each day through its busiest sections.
There are 75 PrincipalStructures throughout the project, with two (PS15 and PS46) major river crossings over the River Dee and the River Don. There are also several secondary structures throughout the project which involve the installation of pre-cast culverts, drainage catch-pitsand other waterway structures.
Leada Acrow met with the design and construction team in June 2014 and wassubsequently invited to tender to provide concrete formworkpanelson several of the structures throughout the project.
Waste Transfer Station
A waste transfer station is being constructed for Viridor Waste Management Ltd at a landfill site near to Castle Cary in Somerset.
The work includes the part demolition of existing structures, and the temporary support and extension of a steel framed building with reinforced concrete waste handling bays, together with external works improvements for the reconfigured facility. The new facility will increase Viridor’s handling capacity of Somerset County waste. The construction contract has been awarded to Britannia Construction and Greystone Construction has been involved in the formwork side of the contract.
The Emporium
The £15 million Emporium scheme revolves around the development of a former lighting factory which dates back to the early 1700’s and is Grade II listed.
Located in the centre of Birmingham on the fringe of East Side Park, within walking distance of the universities, the Bullring and Birmingham New Street Station, the factory has remained derelict since Christopher Wray Lighting moved out in 2003. The development also includes the construction of a new 15-storey concrete framed buildingwhich is being used for student accommodation, plus bars and restaurants at ground level and art and design studios. Georgian Houses are also being converted into offices. The new tower comprises a total of 166 student studio apartments and the new building is designed to complement the existing listed buildings.
Clark Mulhern Construction Limited is based in the West Midlands, specialising in reinforced concrete works, supplying and installing formwork, reinforcement and concrete placement. They were seeking formwork products to enable the core of the new tower block to be slip formed and the construction of pre-tensioned concrete floor slabs.
